Cheese dreams

  • A brief but lovely visit to The Cheese Place in Boston Spa

In putting together the Scottish themed Homage2Fromage for March, Vickie and I were a little stumped – to be honest we only knew of a couple of good Scottish cheeses - the Black Crowdie was a definite, and Vickie had heard of rather good cheddar. However, we wanted more.

Mark, the proprietor of The Cheese Place of Boston Spa had been to a previous event, and had offered his help – so we got in touch.

Not only was he able to find us some amazing Bishops Kennedy rind-washed, a creamy, lush Drumloch, but also some Lanark Blue and the Isle Of Mull cheddar Vickie had heard of. Getting the cheese from Mark also gave me a great excuse for a visit – to pick up the cheese and have a quick look round.

The Cheese Place is compact, located on the high street with plenty of parking nearby. Handy for picking up large quantities of cheese sure, but also good for popping in for more modest supplies...

The shop is a delight. Spacious, fresh, light and well laid out, with a host of pickles and accompaniments greeting you as you enter. Thee are bowls of lush looking olives, balsamic vinegars in huge jars, good oils and a great section of crackers. A sign announces fresh, local bread available on Friday and Saturday …

Towards the back there is a really impressive selection of cheese. Cheeses are not restricted to a single service counter but are spread across three large fridges – grouped by type, with plenty of stock on view. When it comes to stock, this is a truly excellent shop – everything a cheese lover could want, plus lots more.

Mark is knowledgeable and friendly, passionate about his cheese and clearly keen to help – I arrived just as he was talking cheese with a customer, suggesting a selection for her cheese board...

And this is the real advantage of buying from a proper cheese shop – getting not only beautifully kept cheese that is in perfect condition, but also that little bit of advice that can make all the difference...

We were delighted with the cheese we got (and guests at Homage2Fromage will agree!) but are also really happy to add The Cheese Place to our retailers who provide a 10% discount to our members – another reason, if you really needed one, to pay Mark a visit...
